Hi All,

I have just gone to the url where the Air Force has its Agent Orange/Vet  Health Study research posted. I have placed two url's below.

I must admit I became excited with the review of the research in the  overview. First, I wasn't overwhelmed with scientific details I couldn't  understand. And secondly, the generalizations fit into a pattern that I believe many of us with TOXIC INDUCED DISORDERS have been dealing with. I allude to the EARTH DEFICIENCY (weakness of the stomach/spleen-pancreas and  liver organ systems that impact detoxification) at

http://members.aol.com/donpaladin/enhancers.htm

It was the summary of the research from the RANCH HAND VETS that made me realize I MAY be on to something. If you realize that a weakened organ system involving the stomach/spleen-pancreas and liver organ systems cause hypoglycemia, diabetes, weakened energy metabolism, heart disease, ... and I believe chemical intolerance, then you will see the relationship to effects of dioxins upon the Agent Orange Vets. These soldiers had increased heart disease, increased diabetes, and digestive disorder diseases!!! I have imported the overview discussion from the AF research to show you. You can go to the URL to view the whole research website. It is very interesting.

The question I would ask them to investigate is  the PON 1 (serum paraoxonase) levels of the vets who developed diabetes, heart disease, and digestive disorders. PON 1 deficiency correlates with increase diabetes, heart disease and intolerance of organophosphates. Gee, what a surprise!!! If you don't believe me, do a Medline search on serum paraoxonase.

As you know I am NOT trained as a scientist ... but I still can think ... and I do. Let me know what you think. Is there a relationship between toxic induced disorders and a weakened stomach/spleen-pancreas and liver organ system? I only have questions. What do you think?

Mortality

Our most recent mortality study, completed in 1996, found increased numbers of deaths caused by *cardiovascular disease* in enlisted ground personnel and, in all Ranch Hands, increased numbers of deaths caused by diseases of the *digestive system.* Half of the increase in deaths caused by diseases of the circulatory system were caused by atherosclerotic heart disease and most of the deaths caused by diseases of the digestive system were caused by chronic liver cirrhosis. The suggested increases in mortality due to cardiovascular and digestive diseases could be caused by our inability to adjust for smoking and drinking. Smoking and drinking histories are available only for the subgroup of veterans who have attended the physical examinations, most of whom are still living. We summarized these findings in an article and submitted it to a journal for publication.

Morbidity

Dermatologic conditions

We completed a paper on dermatologic conditions and dioxin levels in Ranch Hand veterans which found no cases of chloracne in Ranch Hand veterans and no meaningful or consistent association between dioxin exposure and the prevalence of acne or the location of acne. Those results suggested that Ranch Hand exposure to dioxin was insufficient to produce chloracne or that the exposure may have caused chloracne that has resolved and is currently undetectable. We submitted the paper to a journal in October 1996 and it was accepted for publication in 1997.

Diabetes

We completed a study of dioxin and diabetes which found that glucose abnormalities, diabetes prevalence and the use of oral medications to control diabetes increased while time to diabetes onset decreased with dioxin. Serum insulin abnormalities increased with dioxin in Ranch Hand veterans without diabetes. These results suggest an adverse relation between dioxin exposure and diabetes mellitus, glucose metabolism and insulin production. This work was summarized in a paper which was published in 1997.

Immune Disorders

We completed a study of dioxin and the immune system alteration. We studied skin test results, total lymphocytes, lymphocyte subpopulations, immunoglobulin concentrations, the presence of a broad range of autoantibodies and evidence of clonal B cells. Overall, we found no evidence of a consistent relation between dioxin exposure and immune system alteration. We summarized these results in a paper and submitted it for publication in a scientific journal.

Hematological Effects

We completed a study of dioxin and hematologic function based on data collected in 1982, 1985, 1987 and 1992. We found no important relation between dioxin body burden and red blood cell count, white blood cell count, hemoglobin, hematocrit, mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration and erythrocyte sedimentation rate. Mean corpuscular volume, mean corpuscular hemoglobin and platelet count, however, generally increased with dioxin level at each of the four examinations. It is not known at this time whether these increases are indicative of adverse health in Ranch Hand veterans.

We summarized these findings in an article, which we submitted to a scientific journal.

BTW, of the 41 people who responded to my informal survey on whether they had a tongue cleft (crack or line) in the center of their tongue, 70% responded that they did. You can take the informal poll at http://www.misterpoll.com/results.wga?id=2264273162

Take care,
