U.S. Citizens refuse to quietly go to their deaths under the government's pesticide spraying programs (Profit before People)

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
NO SPRAY ZONE COALITION & CITIZENS OF BALLARD/MAGNOLIA WILL LOUDLY PROTEST DOWNTOWN AT MAYOR'S OFFICE AGAINST PLANNED AERIAL PESTICIDE SPRAYING OF THEIR COMMUNITIES
Seattle, Washington - No Spray Zone, a grassroots coalition group of concerned citizens, area businesses, doctors and environmental organizations, will hold a protest and separate sit-in at Mayor Schell's office on Thursday, April 27 at 4:30. The increasingly unpopular plan by the Washington State Department of Agriculture (WSDA) to spray the pesticide Foray 48B in Ballard and Magnolia, right after Earth Day, is now opposed by five legislators, six doctors, eight environmental and community groups, and twenty businesses in the proposed spray area.
With 1400 petition signatures faxed to the Governor and over 400 residents attending a recent community meeting on the subject, No Spray Zone has now been joined in opposing the spray by City Council members Nick Licata and Heidi Wills, State Senator Jeanne Kohl-Welles, and State Representatives Mary Lou Dickerson and Helen Sommers. The attached list of groups, doctors, local businesses and citizens are showing angry solidarity against the rationale of aerially spraying a pesticide over Magnolia and Ballard.
WSDA documents have been found by No Spray Zone that advise officials to lie and conceal information to residents about the health effects of Foray 48B, and reveal single moths found in the Seattle area over the last nine years did not require spraying. The cause of WSDA's proposal to spray just after Earth Day is the discovery last year of a single Asian Gypsy Moth in Salmon Bay, near the Ballard Locks. Though the active ingredient in the chemical spray is a bacteria known to cause health problems (called Bacillus thuringiensis var. kurstaki or Btk), over 97% of the ingredients of Foray 48B have not been disclosed despite repeated requests. Recently, French scientists have called for a ban on the use of Bt insecticides based on health studies.
WHO: Families, residents and businesses of the proposed spray zones, and representatives of organizations in the NSZ coalition
WHAT: A protest from 4:30 to 5:30, to take place during rush hour, outside the entrance to the Municipal Building, and a press conference during a sit-in outside the Mayor's office from 4:45 to 5:15.
WHEN: Thursday, April 27 from 4:30-5:30 p.m.
WHERE: Municipal Building, 600 4th Ave. Between James and Cherry Streets
*******No Spray Zone will also be taking over all four corners of the intersection of Market Street and 15th Avenue NW in Ballard on Friday, April 28 from 4:30 - 5:30 to protest and hand out info.
Well Lyndon, are you going to listen?
Respectfully, Stephen L. Tvedten
