Lindane Pollutes LA Drinking Water - California to ban uses

... a single treatment of head lice or scabies with lindane pollutes 6 million gallons of water, the equivalent of 300 swimming pools. Lindane lasts for a long time in the environment, where it can contaminate the tissues of fish and other animals.

(Now, who will examine Pyrethrin, Pyrethrum, Permethrin, Pythroids, Malathion and Piperonyl Butoxide being used for lice and scabies and ending up in our water table?)

Dear Mr. Helliker,  I thought you might be interested in an article entitled:  Lindane Pollutes LA Drinking Water. http://www.lacsd.org/lindane

LOS ANGELES, Aug. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- The third reading of California AB 2318 Lindane: Prohibition, is scheduled for August 18.  This is a potentially monumental vote given that the ban is for a chemical used as a medicinal for lice and scabies and is currently prescribed physicians for children and approved by the FDA.  The original petition to ban lindane for this use was submitted to the FDA in 1981 by Consumers Union.  Ralph Nader's Public Citizen as well as the National Pediculosis Association signed on to the original petition for an FDA ban on lindane in 1983.

California however, has monitored its use and identified direct association with use for lice and scabies in polluting Los Angeles drinking water.  You can find more information on the California effort at the comprehensive lindane research website: http://www.lindane.org/lindane/banned.htm.

Lindane products, such as shampoos and creams, are rinsed off after use into the public sewers.  Even after treatment, lindane persists and passes into creeks, rivers, lakes, and oceans.  Lindane is toxic in the water even in very small amounts.  In fact, a single treatment of head lice or scabies with lindane pollutes 6 million gallons of water, the equivalent of 300 swimming pools. Lindane lasts for a long time in the environment, where it can contaminate the tissues of fish and other animals.  The United States Environmental Protection Agency has declared lindane to be a persistent, bioaccumulative, and toxic chemical.

Democrats favor this bill.  Governor Davis is a Democrat, however; he vetoed the Healthy Schools Act which would notify parents in advance of the spraying of pesticides in their child's school.

If you would like to contact the Governor:

Governor Gray Davis State Capitol Building  - Sacramento, CA 95814  -
Phone: (916) 445-2841  - Fax: (916) 445-4633  email: graydavis@governor.ca.gov

Well Mr. Helliker,  I have been writing about an enzyme alternative called Not Nice To Lice that safely and far more effectively removes head lice, their nits and scabies for many years.  The addition of enzymes in the sewer system will actually HELP not POISON the system.  Where do you stand on this "registered" pesticide and pediculicide?

Respectfully,  Stephen L. Tvedten
