Dear Mr. Helliker, I thought you might be interested in two stories from Pest Control Technology by Amanda Paskiet .
The first is entitled: Walls Sent To Prison For Illegal Pesticide Spraying.
BILOXI, Miss. — A federal judge finally ordered Paul Walls, Sr., also known as "Paul the Spray Man," off to jail.
U.S. District Judge Walter J. Gex III ordered Walls to begin serving his sentence within two weeks after being assigned to a federal prison. Walls and Dock Eatman, two unlicensed individuals, were convicted in 1997 after illegally spraying methyl parathion, a banned farm pesticide, in homes, schools and businesses around Mississippi. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency evacuated 47 homes sprayed by the two who had claimed to be treating cockroaches and ants.
Eatman began his federal term of five years and three months earlier this year.
The convictions of Walls and Eatman prompted a multistate crackdown on the widespread misuse of farm chemicals. Robert McCarthy, one of Mississippi's pesticide regulators said the crackdown on pesticide misuse "has resulted in a lot of positive change," including new penalties, new licensing and increased safety education, according to an article by the Associated Press dated Monday, October 2, 2000.
The second story is entitled: Pesticide Safety Bill Considered In Montgomery County, Maryland. Read On
