Dear Mr. Helliker,  I thought you might like to read an article from EPA entitled: PUBLIC MEETING ON FENTHION RISK MITIGATION ISSUES PLANNED.

On January 17, EPA will hold  a public meeting in Orlando, Florida to gather information and hear concerns and comments about risks and possible risk mitigation for the organophosphate pesticide fenthion.  EPA has assessed the risks of fenthion and reached an Interim Reregistration Eligibility Decision (IRED) for this organophosphate pesticide.  The Agency believes that currently registered uses of fenthion pose unreasonable adverse effects to human health and the environment, and that mitigation measures are necessary.  EPA will conduct a public process to identify the best ways to reduce the risks associated with fenthion exposure. This process will include a future public comment period on the risk mitigation proposed in this interim RED, as well as this public meeting, which will be held at the Embassy Suites, 8978 Inter- national Drive, Orlando, Florida, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.  At the conclusion of this process, the Agency will announce a final determination on the risk mitigation it believes must be adopted in order for products containing fenthion to remain eligible for re-registration.  Further information about this meeting is available in the December 29 Federal Register (65 FR 83011).  The Interim Reregistration Eligibility Decision document (IRED) for fenthion will be available on EPA's web page at www.epa.gov/REDs. EPA published a notice of availability for this document in the Federal Register (65 FR 83013) on December 29th. Both of these notices will be available on EPA's web page at  www.epa.gov/fedrgstr.

EPA must receive requests to participate in the meeting by January 8, identified by docket number OPP-34145B.  The Federal Register notice provides detailed instructions for submitting such a request, including via email.

Well Mr. Helliker, there is a Chinese Proverb that says: "The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now."  We should have been using safe and far more effective (unregistered) alternatives generations ago - but, we can start now - if you will "legally" allow us to do so.

Respectfully,  Stephen L. Tvedten

Please write EPA today! If you are sending an e-mail send it to: opp-docket@epa.gov . There is an electronic version of a sample fenthion letter available at http://www.abcbirds.org .
On the subject line of your letter or e-mail write the docket number, OPP-34145A. Thank you!
