Dear  Mr. Helliker, I thought you might like to read an article from the January, 2001  Issue of Members Only Pest Management - the National Pest Management Association Newsletter, it was in The Beehive section.

A 32-year-old man was awarded $10  million by a Monterey County (CA) jury in late October after being exposed to methyl bromide and suffering brain damage.

According to Alfred Lombardo, the plaintiff's lawyer, the man was exposed to methyl bromide in  July,1997 when he entered a recently fumigated home to install a heating system.  According to Lombardo, the pest management company did not follow the proper procedures as mandated by the label.

"Obviously, nobody intended for anyone to get hurt,"  Lombardo told the San Jose Mercury News.  "I think what happened is the company.....got sloppy and cut corners to save a few minutes."

Well Mr. Helliker, Compared with the safe alternatives (heat, microwaves and electricity) that your Department of Pesticide Regulation is about to "attack and criminally fine out of existence";  I think that just this one example of the needless brain damage caused by "using" only one of your "registered" (wood destroying insect) POISONS says it all!  To continue to mandate that only the use/misue of your "registered" POISONS can be used to "legally control" wood destroying organisms and to stop and/or fine any safe alternatives out of existence, is what is really criminal, in my opinion.  But, I think at least the family of one 32 year-old man might agree with my opinion.

Respectfully,  Stephen L. Tvedten
