StarLink - Government Report on Biotech Corn Disputed by Some Who Got Sick
One of the most important things most of us with chemical and food intolerances should have learned by now is that we don't have "antibody mediated allergies." What we likely have are metabolic disorders in which the enzymes which are responsible for breaking down natural and synthetic biochemicals are deficient. For example, there is now a good deal of research that indicates that a portion of the population produces a low level of an enzyme that detoxifies (breaks down) organophosphate pesticides. Dr. Robert Haley has done PON Q research on Gulf War Vets with GWS and found that those with low levels of PON Q he tested had develop Gulf War Syndrome.
It will take awhile for science to catch up with the reality of our disorder. The conventional medical and scientific establishment is highly vested in the antibody mediated allergy model. Just recently I saw on the news that research on prescribed allergy medication indicates that two-thirds of those being prescribed medication for their allergies don't benefit from it. This research was done by a pharmacology administrator who had been prescribed medication for her "allergy-like" symptoms but was not benefiting from the medication treatment. What she learned later is that she had an "intolerance" to the chlorine in the swimming pool in which she swam. (see http://www.msnbc.com/news/579946.asp )
When the EPA , the FDA, and other operatives for industry assert that there is no evidence for an allergic response to GM foods, one must understand that their current level of understanding related to "environmental intolerance" is skewed by a limited understanding of the role antibodies play in the mechanism of allergy and allergy like symptoms. Too bad those who had reactions to the GM foods (corn) did not also have their enzyme levels tested. That will come ... but it is slow coming.
