Dear Mr. Helliker, Susan Molloy <susanm@cybertrails.com

Facing yet another Medfly spraying cycle across the nine southern states, had been reading the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Animal and Plant Inspection Service "Medfly Cooperative Eradication Program: Final E.I.S."  On Page 102 of that document, under "Synergistic Effects," it says "The addition of ascorbic acid (Vitamin C) to the diet of rats was reported to enhance the acute toxicity of chlorpyrifos [Dursban and Lorsban] and increase serum phosphatase activity." This would indicate that Vitamin C made Dursban and Lorsban worse for the rats - so Susan asked: "what about people with MCS"?

Well Mr. Helliker, I would also like to ask you about the increased and unknown danger to other people?  Have you ever bothered to consider this enhanced acute toxicity when you "registered" your POISONS?  Are you now advocating we stop drinking orange juice when we use your "registered" POISONS?  Are you going to add this warning to the label?

Respectfully,  Stephen L. Tvedten

Comment:

Just wanted to comment on the addition of Vitamin C increasing the toxicity of Dursban. Humans (and primates) are the only animals that cannot manufacture their own vitamin C. They must ingest it in foods or pills. Rats on the other hand can make it, so giving additional vitamin C may create a toxicity that would not necessarily apply to humans.
