Dear Mr. Helliker,  I thought you might like to read an article entitled: Prairie Dog Extermination Postponed.

BOULDER, Colo. — People opposed to a plan to exterminate prairie dogs living in school yards have 30 days to come up with an alternative solution, officials said.

Boulder Valley School District officials have said the rodents and their burrows are hazardous to students. Many burrows are near or on playing fields, and officials fear a student could be injured by stepping in a hole, or could contract a disease from the animals.

"Our hope is that there is a viable plan that is developed, but if no viable plan is developed then we will proceed with the eradication plan," said Janelle Albertson, district spokeswoman.

Dave Crawford of Boulder's Rocky Mountain Animal Defense has led efforts to save the prairie dogs since the school district announced Dec. 21 that it planned to put pesticides in burrows at five schools.

Animal Defense has twice asked a judge to impose a temporary injunction to stop the treatments. The request was denied both times. Crawford said he is confident his group and others will come up with a solution. They are working on several alternatives, including erecting barriers and relocating the animals.

Well Mr. Helliker, If they are going to eradicate the Prairie Dogs, they do not need to use any of your deadly "registered" POISONS, all they have to use is carbon dioxide.  Carbon dioxide is one and a half times heavier than air and simply puts the little critters to sleep and then asphyxiates them.  The children can not be poisoned or harmed by the carbon dioxide in the tunnels.

Respectfully,  Stephen L. Tvedten
