Georgia Ag Department Warns Of Improper Termiticide Treatments

ATLANTA — The Georgia Department of Agriculture issued a consumer warning in response to recent problems with pest control companies selling trench-and-treat-only applications using non-repellent termiticides.

Georgia Department of Agriculture Commissioner Tommy Irvin said that some pest management companies have begun to recommend a type of treatment with new non-repellent termiticides, such as Premise® and Termidor®, where only parts of the structure such as the exterior soil and similar areas are treated.

“This type of application is not recommended nor approved by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Georgia Department of Agriculture, the manufacturers of the termiticides nor the products’ label directions,” Irvin stated in the consumer warning.

Irvin added that the Georgia Department of Agriculture has established treatment standards that are designed to protect homes against attack from termites. Some pest management companies are trying to bypass these regulations, and the termiticides label directions, by getting consumers to sign a release, commonly known as a Form II.

Karl Kisner, product manager of Termidor agrees with Irvin’s statement. “From our position, we certainly strongly support what the commissioner stated,” Kisner said. “We want to make sure that pest management professionals are abiding by the label and applying full applications as the label requires and following state regulations.”

James Cink, product and technical support coordinator, Bayer Professional Care — which manufactures Premise — added that Bayer has always supported its products when used according to label guidelines. Cink said this is evidenced by the guarantees and support Bayer provides for Premise.

“The notice that went out from (Irvin) was in response to an application practice that does not follow label guidelines for termite control,” Cink said. “This notice was not a statement or notification about the performance of Premise.”
