Fears venison poisoned

Deer hunters could be putting New Zealand 's $300 million venison export industry at risk.

Wild venison has been withdrawn from New Zealand shops amid fears that the meat could be poisonous.

MAF officials say that poachers may have supplied processing plants with deer contaminated by pest control poison.

MAF has recalled 85 tonnes of wild venison, some of it is already in overseas markets.

The venison was all sourced from poachers who may have killed deer in pest control areas where 1080 and other poisons are used.

Police say that deer poaching is on the rise because of the high export prices being paid for venison.

The threat posed by the poachers is prompting the government to consider banning all wild deer exports.

But deer hunters say that decision would be wrong.

Deer hunters say that the deer population will explode if hunters do not keep the numbers down, and keeping deer numbers down is essential to protect precious natural habitats.

Two processing plants in Dunedin and Rotorua have now closed their wild deer killing chains costing a dozen jobs.

The processing plants say that it is not worth the risk, if the government ends up banning wild deer exports.
