New protest over 1080 drop

By DAVID BRUCE
A sackful of dead birds and a stack of carrots were dropped at the feet of DOC officers in a 1080 poison protest yesterday.

More than 160 people braved bad weather to march through Whakapapa Village on Mt Ruapehu to protest the Department of Conservation's intended 1080 drop over the Erua state forest.

The planned aerial spreading of the possum poison was due to start any day, according to protester Steve Carr.

"The birds that were dropped on DOC were tui, bellbirds, bush robins, shining cuckoos and some other species collected from the Tongariro state forest after a 1080 drop there last year," he said.

"Everyone wants pest control, but we are worried about the aerial drops . . . there have been accidents . . . birds, fish and eels have been poisoned."

Mr Carr said the village of Raurimu drew its water supply from one of the catchments that has been targeted.

The protesters believed that there were other more user-friendly options.

"There has been, and still is, ground treatment in the park.

"DOC says they can't cover it all on foot, but it has been done," he said.
