"Parkinson's disease shows similar characteristics. A protein called alpha-synuclein misfolds and aggregates in the brain in plaques called Lewy bodies. Protofibrils of synuclein have been detected in patients' cells and appear to be toxic. Certain genes and environmental factors, like exposure to a pesticide called rotenone, ultimately increase the misfolding process."
