CELA Responds to Federal Consultation on the Precautionary Principle

Contact: Theresa McClenaghan, Counsel, 416-960-2284 ext. 218 mcclenat@lao.on.ca

In response to the federal government's discussion paper, "A Canadian Perspective on the Precautionary Approach/Principle," CELA recently participated in the preparation of an NGO response. In a comprehensive critique of the government position, CELA found that neither the government's proposed vision, nor current practices, reflect a precautionary approach to decision-making about hazards.

The report responds in detail to the government discussion paper and also provides an alternative vision of how precaution can be implemented in Canada in a proactive manner that better reflects the public interest and incorporates the perspectives of a broader cross-section of society and disciplines.
