1) COMMENT PERIOD OPENS ON GUIDANCE FOR METHODOLOGY FOR
ASSESSING LOW TOXICITY PESTICIDE CHEMICALS
EPA has prepared a guidance document on how low toxicity pesticide chemicals including inert ingredients ? sometimes referred to as other ingredients ? would be evaluated for use in pesticide products. EPA developed this methodology to comply with the requirements of the Food Quality Protection Act of 1996 (FQPA), and to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the inert review process. A chemical can be used as an inert ingredient in some pesticide products and as an active ingredient in other pesticide products. The Agency believes that a screening methodology is the most efficient and appropriate way to handle the variety of hazard and exposure issues posed by inert ingredients. This methodology streamlines the Agency's decision-making process on low or low/moderate toxicity chemical substances in pesticide products. This will also allow the Agency to focus its resources on evaluating chemical substances of potentially higher toxicity. This guidance document is being made available for public review and comment, and is available on the Web at http://www.epa.gov/oppfead1/cb/csb_page/updates/lowertox.pdf (696k, PDF). The Federal Register Notice and instructions on how to submit comments are available at: http://www.epa.gov/fedrgstr/EPA-PEST/2002/June/Day-13/p14996.htm . Comments must be received by EPA no later than September 11, 2002.
