EU to ban 230 pesticide products in drive to reduce farmers' dependence

Thu Jul 4, 8:54 AM ET BRUSSELS, Belgium - The European Union ( news - web sites) said Thursday it would ban 320 substances used in pesticide production as part of plans to reduce risks to human health and the environment.

"We must make pesticide use sustainable ... to make agricultural production less dependent on pesticides," said EU Environment Commissioner Margot Wallstroem.

Her spokeswoman Pia Ahrenkilde said the EU was launching consultations with farmers, environmentalists and other concerned groups to "improve way we use pesticides and reduce reliance" on them.

She said the aim was ensure better control on the use of pesticides, their replacement with nontoxic substitutes and incentives for pesticide-free farming.

Ahrenkilde said the EU uses 320,000 tons of pesticides yearly and the level is increasing.

Current EU legislation requires manufacturers to prove their products reach required safety standards. The EU said the industry had failed to present a defense for 320 pesticide ingredients that would therefore be withdrawn from the market by 2003.

Well Mr. Helliker, will you follow the EU initiative or will you continue to "register" these POISONS and insist that everyone must continue to use them and only them to "control" pest problems?  I was told yesterday by a reporter that "an American Company" is planning to use "Free" Trade's Rule 11 to sue Quebec, until that independent Nation bows to "their" will and agrees to allow the continued use/misuse of their "registered" POISON to POISON their people!  I have posted a free pest control book on the web that uses safe and far more effective alternatives, it is entitled: THE BUG STOPS HERE.  You can download it for free at: http://www.thebestcontrol.com .   - Voltaire once noted: "Who forgives a crime becomes the accomplice. (Qui pardonne au crime en devient le complice.)"
