Probabilistic Risk Analysis: Assessment, Management,
and Communication
October 1 - 4, 2002
Course Director:
Kimberly M. Thompson, ScD
Assistant Professor of Risk Analysis and Decision Science
Harvard School of Public Health
Overview:
Come to Boston in October and learn the key elements of probabilistic risk
assessment, management, and communication from an outstanding faculty of
nationally and internationally known experts from relevant disciplines
George Apostolakis, David Burmaster, Karl Claxton, Roger Cooke, Louis Anthony
"Tony" Cox, Jr., Sharon Dunwoody, Marc Lipsitch, Louise Ryan, Kimberly Thompson,
and David Vose. Combining lectures, case examples, and hands-on computer
exercises, this unique program allows you to gain valuable knowledge in the
classroom and computer lab. Relaxing evening dinners provide the perfect
opportunity to increase your network of professional contacts as you interact
with faculty and participants, and hands-on evening sessions provide
opportunities to try new skills.
Who Should Attend:
This course is designed for professionals within government, industry,
consulting groups, trade associations, academia, law firms, and other
organizations who want to advance their knowledge of probabilistic risk
analysis.
Why You Should Attend:
Understanding the basics of probabilistic risk analysis is critical to
staying on the forefront in the evolving area of risk analysis, and this course
offers the tools you need. Government agencies, including the U.S. Department of
Agriculture, Nuclear Regulatory
Commission, Food and Drug Administration, Environmental Protection Agency, and
Consumer Product Safety Commission, now use probabilistic risk analysis in the
context of regulation. Numerous industries use probabilistic risk analysis in
their decision-making and in determining the value of investing in research to
obtain additional information.
Upon Completion of This Course You Should Be Able To:
Critically review probabilistic risk assessments
Distinguish variability and uncertainty, particularly in the context of risk management
Evaluate the impacts of choices made to characterize information from data and experts
Explore the use of Bayesian methods in risk assessments
Communicate probabilistic risk assessment results
Course Topics Include:
Developing probabilistic models
A guided tour of probability distributions
Developing distributions from data and from expert elicitation
Value of information analysis
Using the results of probabilistic risk assessment in risk management
Communicating uncertain and variable risks
Participants are expected to have a working knowledge of risk analysis, and feel reasonably confident about their abilities to apply mathematical reasoning and use computers for problem solving. The website at www.pracourse.harvard.edu lists the course schedule and will provide access to post-course materials to registered participants.
Course Fee:
$1,895 before September 1, 2002
$1,995 after September 1, 2002
Continuing Education Units Offered:
Council on Continuing Education, 2.5 CEUs (may be applied toward continuance of certification with the Board of Certified Safety Professionals)
All registered participants will be awarded a certificate of completion at the end of the course, and will have access to post-course materials.
