July 12, 2002 - Atlanta Business Chronicle - Georgia-Pacific Sued For Alleged Use Of Carcinogen In Lumber.
A lawsuit has been filed in federal court alleging Georgia-Pacific Corp. exposed customers to arsenic in its products, The Associated Press reported.
The suit claims Atlanta-based
Georgia-Pacific (NYSE: GP) sells lumber containing chromate copper arsenate, or
CCA, concealing the danger of the human carcinogen to customers. CCA is a
pesticide used to protect lumber from decay and insect damage for use in
playgrounds, decks and picnic
tables.
The plaintiff named in the suit is Alabama state trooper Kevin Beasley, who claims he became seriously ill after handling CCA-treated wood while building a deck in May.
The suit seeks class-action status and unspecified compensatory and punitive damages.
Georgia-Pacific has already been hit by thousands of asbestos lawsuits and will soon split into two publicly traded companies -- a consumer products and packaging company and a building products and distribution company. An initial public offering of stock in the new consumer products and packaging company is scheduled for the third quarter.
Georgia-Pacific spokeswoman Robin Keegan told The Associated Press the company is reviewing the CCA lawsuit and could not comment.
