Democracy and herbicides.

For over thirty years, the Public Forests of New Brunswick Canada have been sprayed with herbicides annually.

Aerial spraying started in the seventies on Public Forests. It has been carried out with

2,4-D, 2,4,5-T, Round up, Garlon, Vision ( some containing Agent Orange). Over 270 000 hectares were sprayed to promote a conifer industrial forest at the expense of the environment and naturally regenerating mixed wood forests.

According to present policies of the Department of Natural Resources, more than 70 percent of our Crown productive forest is subject to herbicide spraying, including recognized deer wintering areas.

The Atlantic salmon, which made some of our rivers famous, has all but vanished. Deer, once plentiful in the northern part of the province, have dwindled to a few isolated individuals.

New Brunswick, with a population of less than 800 000 people, is politically dominated by five of the largest multinational pulp and paper companies.

UPM-Kymmene, J.D. Irving Limited, Ste Anne Nackawic Ltd, Bowater Maritimes Inc and Nexfor Fraser Papers Inc have practically complete control over management planning and harvesting of our Public Forests.

This year, these companies have planned and proposed the spraying of some 12 000 hectares of Public Forest. UPM-Kymmene, not allowed to use these herbicides on the forests of its own country, plans and recommends the spray of herbicides on our forests.

On the other hand, native, social, labour and environmental groups of New Brunswick have tried in vain to participate in the planning of the management of our Public Forests.

We appeal to the international community to help us preserve what is left of our natural forest and of our environment.

Please contact our Premier, through the following site, to protest this irresponsible aggression on our environment. Forwarding this message to caring friends would be of great help to us.

Well Mr. Helliker, once again I ask a simple question: "Who is the real terrorist?"
