Shediac Outlaws Chemical Weapons In War Of Weeds
Shediac, N.B. - 'Other towns will probably follow suit' The town of Shediac is leading the way in pesticide bans in New Brunswick. The town is the first to pass a by-law making it pesticide and insecticide- free next year.
Next summer, people who live in Shediac will have to put up with the weeds and pests on their lawns or come up with a chemical-free way to get rid of them.
The town hasn't used chemicals on public grounds for years. Now it wants home and business owners to stop using them as well.
The deputy mayor says people have long complained about health problems caused by spraying.
Raymond Cormier says the town is also worried about the safety of its water supply.
"We're afraid it will seep into the water eventually and we're very proud of our water. We have good, clean drinking water and we want to keep it that way. "
Town council hasn't decided yet how it will enforce the by-law but Cormier thinks people will be more than happy to comply.
"I'm not saying there isn't someone against it but the vast majority of people I've talked to are well in favour and say it's about time."
A spokesperson for the province says many municipalities are considering a pesticide ban. Cormier thinks Shediac will really get the ball rolling.
"Other towns will probably follow suit after they see what we're doing in Shediac because quite a few towns were waiting to see what happened here."
The only exception to Shediac's by-law is the local golf course. It has a five year grace period to come up with alternate ways to keep the greens weed free.
