Herbicides and Indoor Air Quality Application
Herbicides are chemicals that inhibit, retard or kill plant growth. Herbicides affect metabolic growth within the plant and should be handled appropriately. Overexposure to herbicides can lead to an array of health affects that include irritation to eyes, skin, mucous membranes, and respiratory tract. Large doses of certain herbicides can lead to vomiting, diarrhea, headache, confusion, bizarre or aggressive behavior, anorexia, weight loss, severe metabolic acidosis, ulcers of the mouth and pharynx, and toxic injury to liver, kidneys, and central nervous system. Children are especially susceptible to overexposure, with health affects ranging from respiratory distress and cerebral palsy, to impaired development.Direct dermal exposure, inhalation, and ingestion are the most common exposure routes . Water-soluble herbicides are not retained in body tissues for long periods, as were the old lipophilic organochlorine insecticides, such as DDT. Most are excreted, mainly in the urine, within one to four days.
These herbicides can be found in buildings if the product is applied indoors, improperly stored indoors, or enters the structure through infiltration or by being tracked into the building on clothing or in dust.
Required Equipment for Water and Soil Sampling
- Sterile Glass Jar for Soil
- Sterile Amber Glass Bottle for Water
Sampling Methods for Herbicides in Water or Soil
- Using gloves, collect the water or soil sample in the sterile container. Depending on sampling and project specifications, samples can be collected from the immediate source or composites of different time intervals or different sample locations.
- Replace cap and label sample container appropriately. If shipping sample to laboratory, ensure adequate packing material surrounds container to prevent breakage in transit.
- Samples should be shipped cold and be received at laboratory as soon as possible.
Quality Control
Multiple samples should be collected for comparison studies to include at a minimum: a suspect sample and a sample from an outside source that lacks potential contamination.References

Staphylococcus is a Gram-positive bacterium that has a thick-walled, spherical morphology and carotenoid pigment that affords protection from ultraviolet light and desiccation. Most Staphylococcal species are common inhabitants of the human skin and mucous membranes. For example, large populations of Staphylococcus capitis are commonly found in large populations on the human head, especially the scalp and forehead where sebaceous glands are numerous and well developed. Staphylococcus aureus prefers the anterior nostrils as a habitat.Skin infections caused by Staphylococcus aureus are the most common human staphylococcal infections. These include cellulitis, pustules, boils, carbuncles, impetigo and postoperative wound infections. A common community acquired disorder is food poisoning caused by thermostable enterotoxins released into foods during growth of S. aureus. Other common staphylococcal pathogens are S. epidermidis, S. saprophyticus, S. intermedius and S. hyicus.
Fungal Fact #1:
A variety of different fungi are currently approved by the EPA for use as fungicides and insecticides. These pesticides provide natural, safe ways of preventing the growth of unwanted insects and of fungi that cause plant disease. A specific example is Gliocladium. Gliocladium catenulatum strain J1446 has been commercially sold as Primastop and is approved only for indoor use. Gliocladium virens GL-21 has been sold as SoilGard and can be used both indoors and outdoors. Both preparations are used to prevent rot and other root diseases.
