Resolution passed by the Public Convention against Insecticides organised by the Community at Periya Government High School, Kasaragod on 17th of August 2002 (Farmers Day)

That for the last 20 years, the Plantation Corporation of Kerala (PCK) has been spraying an extremely hazardous chemical called Endosulfan, in the name of "medicine" for the cashew farms. This has wrecked untold miseries among 35 villages in the district of Kasaragod in Kerala.

That this has led to the death of many and hundreds of people are suffering due to cancer and other dangerous diseases. Hence this Convention demands that Endosulfan, which has been threatening life and environment, be banned immediately.

Because it has been proven from studies that all chemical poisons that is being used in the name of insecticides is slowly destroying life on this earth, the convention demands that all such chemical pesticides be totally banned. The convention understands that in developed countries, many of these pesticides have either been banned or severely restricted from use.

The Convention demands that the Central Government and the Ministry of Agriculture cancel the registration for manufacture and use of Endosulfan and all other highly toxic chemical pesticides.

The Convention demands that Medical assistance, financial and other support be immediately given to all the Endosulfan spray affected people in Kasaragod.

While it has already been proven in the studies conducted by agencies of the Central Government that endosulfan is the cause for the health problems seen in Kasaragod, the Convention protests at the Central Government's decision to send install another enquiry committee and thus unnecessarily spending the tax payers money. The convention declares that the people will not cooperate with such studies and enquiry committees and that the people hereby vow to take all necessary action to stop such farcical enquiries and study trips.

The Convention demand that a judicial enquiry be ordered against all these enquiry committees and their reports and also to enquire into the functioning of these committees and their nefarious relationships.

The Convention asks of all the Grama Panchayaths in the district and the District Panchayath to ban the sale and use of all chemical pesticides and that this District of Kasaragod be declared a "Pesticide Free District".

The Convention declares that the people will struggle , with all their mights even with their lives, for survival of all lives including human beings and for the generations to come.

Finally, the Convention sees it as necessary that farmers should stop the use of chemical pesticides and fertilizers and adopt organic methods that do not cause harm to human life, life forms and the environment. The convention urges the farmers and the Government to change from modern cash crops and mono culture intensive farming to farming methods and life styles that are more in tune with the natural systems.

(The Convention was addressed by community leaders and attended by more than 300 people. There were more than 150 women and children who attended the Convention. It was presided over by the local M.L.A. Sri. Kunhiraman, the Periya Panchayath President, Smt. Narayani, the Kasaragod District Congress Committee (I) Vice president Mr. Gangadharan Nair, Society for Environment Education in Kerala Director Sri. T.P. Padmanabhan, Community leaders Sri Kunhambu Nair, Sri Kottan. The technical session was handled by Dr. Y. S. Mohankumar from Perla, Smt. Usha, Sri. Sridhar and Sri K.V. Sivaprasad. The resolution was presented by Sudheer Kumar of Kasaragod District Environmental Committee. )

Well Mr. Helliker, the people are speaking all over the world against your "registered" POISONS.

Respectfully, Stephen L. Tvedten
