Egypt official for alleged corruption

CAIRO, Aug 25, 2002 (United Press International via COMTEX) --
Egyptian authorities arrested a senior government official and three other people on charges of corruption, Egyptian security sources said Sunday.

Undersecretary of the Agriculture Ministry Ali Yousef Abdul Rahman, who is also chairman of the Agricultural Development Bank of Egypt, was detained for 15 days pending investigation, the sources said.

Abdul Rahman was being investigated for allegedly accepting bribes from a French company, importing pesticide and taking commissions, they said.

The sources added that three others were arrested in connection with the same case. The others reportedly include a female employee in the bank Abdul Rahman heads, a French firm's agent in Egypt and another unnamed man.

Abdul Rahman, 42, is close to Deputy Prime Minister and Agriculture Minister Yousef Wali, the secretary-general of the ruling National Democratic Party.

The current crackdown on corruption comes ahead of the Sept. 15 convening of the National Democratic Party's congress amid sharp differences among the ruling party's leaders and members on adopting a new program to be presented, aimed at developing the group's performance and attracting new members.

Recent branch elections of the party witnessed the downfall of a number of local party leaders supported by the "old guard," and the emergence of young new leaders led by President Hosni Mubarak's oldest son, Jamal.
