1) Public Comment Invited on Carbaryl Risk Assessments
On August 28, 2002, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) published a Federal Register notice announcing the availability of human health and environmental fate and effect risk assessments and related documents for carbaryl. This notice also starts a 60-day public comment period for the risk assessment. Comments are to be limited to issues directly associated with carbaryl and raised by the risk assessments or other documents placed in the docket. The Agency cautions that the risk assessments for carbaryl are preliminary and that further refinements may be appropriate.
By allowing access and opportunity for comment on the risk assessments, EPA is seeking to strengthen stakeholder involvement and help ensure that our decisions under FQPA are transparent and based on the best available information. The tolerance reassessment process will ensure that the United States continues to have the safest and most abundant food supply.
Comments, identified by the docket control number OPP-2002-0138 for carbaryl, must be received on or before October 28, 2002. Additional information on carbaryl is available on EPA’s website at http://www.epa.gov/pesticides/reregistration/status.htm.
The Federal Register notice is available from EPA's website at http://www.epa.gov/fedrgstr

2) FIFRA SAP to Review Proposed Methodology Related To Dietary Risk Assessment
The Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA) Scientific Advisory Panel (SAP) will meet on October 1 to consider and review a proposed methodology for estimating how much of a crop is treated with pesticides (referred to as percent-crop-treated) based on historical data.
EPA is seeking to develop a more robust method for projecting/estimating percent-crop-treated. The Agency has explored and developed methods that it believes could serve the purpose for refining projected domestic percent-crop-treated and is looking for SAP input on these methods.
The meeting will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Sheraton Crystal City Hotel, 1800 Jefferson Davis Highway, Arlington, VA. The telephone number for the hotel is (703) 486-1111.
The public may submit oral or written comments. Further information about participating in the meeting or submitting comments is available in the Federal Register notice announcing the meeting, which was published on August 23, 2002. Information on the meeting including the Federal Register notice is available online at http://www.epa.gov/scipoly/sap/index.htm#october. The official record for this meeting is docket number OPP-2002-0228.
