From the Scorecard Outreach:

The Toxic Releases from Industrial Facilities content on the Scorecard web site has recently been updated with the latest available (year 2000) data from the Environmental Protection Agency.  This allows you to get a detailed report on the toxic chemicals being released in your area including the top polluting companies. You can also get a summary report for any area in the country.  For more information on the TRI database and how Scorecard uses this information, please go to http://www.scorecard.org/general/tri/tri_gen.html

TOXICS IN YOUR COMMUNITY - SEPTEMBER 1, 2002 http://www.scorecard.org/about/txt/new.html

The latest data from U.S. EPA indicate that industrial facilities released over 6.5 billion pounds of toxic chemicals to the environment in 2000. Once again, Nevada tops the list of polluted states with over 1 billion pounds of chemical releases. Lee County in Mississippi experienced the largest releases of recognized carcinogens to air; Hamblen County in Tennessee had the largest releases of recognized developmental toxicants to air. Kennecott Utah Copper Mine takes the title of number one polluter in the U.S., releasing over 800 million pounds of toxic chemicals (more than 30 entire states). Mining and electrical power generation are the top sources of reported chemical releases in the U.S.

For the first time, TRI now provides data on dioxin compounds. Chemicals And Allied Products is the industrial sector responsible for over 80% of total releases. Mississippi tops all 50 state in terms of total environmental releases; with Harrison County receiving almost half of total reported US releases, all due to land disposal operations at a single facility: the Du Pont Delisle Plant in Pass Christian.
