A Florida lawsuit raises health concerns over the commonly used pesticide Malathion. In 1999, the Centers for Disease Control concluded that the chemical was responsible for more than two hundred illnesses in Florida, including one death. The pesticide was used to combat the medfly outbreak that threatened Florida's orange crop. The Environmental Protection Agency said high storage temperatures for the chemical could have contributed to the spray's high level of toxicity. Similar temperatures are often found in Louisiana.

Louisiana Mosquito Districts questioned the chemical's ability to handle high temperatures more than seven years ago. New Orleans is the only district still using the spray. Now concerns are being raised once again.

The state has doubled up on its spraying efforts since the West Nile Outbreak. So far no illnesses have been reported in Louisiana as a result of Malathion use.
