California Urges Study Of Alarming Breast Cancer Rates
From: DBesanko@aol.com
I have five women friends, ages 39-46 who have been diagnosed w/ breast cancer in the last four years. All five are mothers of three and four young children. I feel that my group of friends is just the tip of the iceberg. This is a national health care crisis. Inside of ten years, the chemical industry will mirror what has been happening with the tobacco industry and law suits will be initiated against the multi-billion dollar chemical companies such as Dow, Monsanto and BASF.
On the North Shore, where I live, we (collectively) use thousands of lbs of pesticides (herbicides) in fertilizers each season. No one should think Northern California has the cap on high breast cancer rates. We got it all right here. When I tell my neighbors, friends and husband's colleagues that they should not be putting these harmful chemicals on their lawns. They say things such as, "It is such a small amount that it is not harmful." or "I use granular chemicals... so they get absorbed more readily into the ground." (and go directly into our ground water!) or even, "My lawn care company told me it was safe." Can you imagine?! My 68 yr old neighbor who just recovered from breast cancer four years ago applies pesticides to her lawn three times each summer. When I explained the hazards of these types of chemicals. She informed me that she had already "paid" for the summer applications! However, she would consider not using chemicals next summer!
My other next door neighbor sprayed 2,4-D right into my windows (they were open) and I became very ill from this spray.
These are otherwise highly educated individuals in their field of study. It is very disheartening to live in such an ignorant era. I have hope that some sort of enlightment will be upon us soon!
