World-wide Environmental Pest Management Alliance (WEPMA) Formed During The NPMA Convention

ORLANDO — A new and informal global pest control group — known as World-wide Environmental Pest Management Alliance (WEPMA) — was officially launched by leaders of the international pest control community during a two-day Global Summit that took place during the National Pest Management Association’s Pest Management '02 Convention, held at the Gaylord Palms Resort & Convention Center, Orlando, Fla., Oct. 16-19.

Following initial discussions held at last year's NPMA Convention in New Orleans, association heads and individual representatives from the four global pest management associations – NPMA (representing North America), CEPA (representing Europe), COPLAG (representing Asia, the Far East and Australia) and FAOPMA (representing Latin America) – combined forces to organize the Global Summit.

Pest control issues of common concern, such as product registration, the public’s perception of pesticides and technician training, were addressed during the two days. In the opening session, Rob Fryatt of UK-based Sorex International, laid the foundations of the meeting by declaring “this is a global meeting for a global industry.”

The keynote speaker, Xavier Bonnefoy, WHO Regional Advisor for Environmental Health from Geneva, Switzerland, outlined the survey which WHO is about to commence to gather data concerning the economic impact and risks associated with public health pests.

Participants in this year’s Global Summit agreed that the activities of this international group should be united under the umbrella of WEPMA. Plans are in the works to hold another Global Summit at next year’s NPMA Pest Management Conference in Dallas, Texas.
