D-Limonene toxicity
A few years ago SafeScience Inc. reviewed the literature on d-limonene and raised both the suspected carcinogen status and possible contamination of d-limonene by trace pesticide residues (d-limonene is often produced from the rinds of citrus fruits/citrus oils). SafeScience Inc. decided not to formulate with d-limonene [(R)-1-METHYL-4-(1-METHYLETHENYL)- CYCLOHEXENE (9CI) ].
Under the conditions of 2-year gavage study posted on the NTP site, there was "clear evidence" of carcinogenic activity of d-limonene for male F344/N rats, as shown by increased incidences of tubular cell hyperplasia, adenomas, and adenocarcinomas of the kidney. Interestingly, no adverse problems for female rats. For those interested in additional details please visit this links:

The following National Toxics Program reference suggests that concentrated d-limonene has a number of concerns.

"Since this chemical is a known or suspected carcinogen you should contact a physician for advice regarding the possible long term health effects and potential recommendation for medical monitoring. Recommendations from the physician will depend upon the specific compound, its chemical, physical and toxicity properties, the exposure level, length of exposure, and the route of exposure."
