CARBARYL ASSESSMENT AVAILABLE
EPA has released a preliminary health and ecological assessment on carbaryl, the active ingredient in Sevin.  Carbaryl is one of the most widely used insecticides in the U.S.  The risks from carbaryl are largely limited to residential uses and possibly drinking water exposures.  None of the agricultural uses have led to any concerns over dietary risk.  Carbaryl is the second-most widely detected insecticide in surface water, leading to surface water concerns.  Copies of the preliminary assessment are available at: http://www.epa.gov/oppsrrd1/reregistration/carbaryl (Source: Pesticide & Toxic Chemical News, Vol. 30, No. 45)

PESTICIDE SECURITY
All pesticide industry organizations and facilities are encouraged to review existing security measures.  Pesticide safety and security is important at anytime for your pest control business.  The following security measures should be taken:

Security also involves being alert to unusual or suspicious actions. Indications that something is amiss may include unusual behavior by customers, employees or others.  Any suspicious activity should be reported immediately to your local law enforcement agency.  (Source: IPMnet NEWS, Issue 94)

DIAZINON PHASE-OUT
EPA has begun a phase out of all non-agriculture outdoor uses of diazinon. This includes home lawns and gardens or any other outdoor residential or outdoor non-agricultural use.

In the meantime, diazinon can still be used according to the label directions until the supply is completely used.  However, no diazinon product can be sold by retailers after December 31, 2004.  Technical registrants will begin buying back existing products from retailers after the stop-sale date.

Any diazinon labeled for indoor use can not be sold after December 31, 2002. This includes diazinon labeled for homes, schools, stores and other enclosed areas such as greenhouses.

QUEBEC PLANS TO BAN NON-AGRICULTURAL PESTICIDES
The Canadian province of Quebec announced plans to ban the use of most non-farm pesticides by 2005.  The province will immediately move to ban 28 pesticides on public lands, including parks, schools, day-care centers and hospitals.  As of 2005, the ban will be extended to private and commercial lands.  Golf courses will have to develop strategies to significantly reduce pesticide use by 2005.  Pesticide use on agricultural land will not be affected.
