IN THIS EPA UPDATE:
DIAZINON IRED COMMENT PERIOD IS EXTENDED
EPA is extending the public comment period on the Diazinon Interim Reregistration Eligibility Decision (IRED) until January 10, 2003, as announced in a Federal Register notice on December 11. The Diazinon IRED was initially released through a September 25, 2002, Federal Register notice for a 60-day public comment period, which ended November 25, 2002. The Agency did receive comments during this time. However, the September notice did not include the pesticide name "Diazinon" in its official title, which may have resulted in interested parties not finding the notice.
The Diazinon IRED, signed on July 31, 2002, discusses measures designed to reduce risks to birds and other wildlife, agricultural workers, and the environment. These actions are part of a second agreement between EPA and diazinon technical registrants. Diazinon is eligible for reregistration, provided that risk mitigation measures specified in the IRED are adopted. The Agency is inviting comment on diazinon's benefits, usage, risks to workers and the environment, and related issues.
The Diazinon IRED concludes EPA's review of this pesticide, which was conducted with extensive input from USDA, stakeholders, and the public through the OP pilot public participation process. When EPA completes its cumulative evaluation of the OP pesticides, further risk mitigation measures may be required for diazinon and other OPs.
The Diazinon IRED, risk assessments, and related documents are available on EPA's diazinon web page at http://www.epa.gov/pesticides/op/diazinon.htm. The Diazinon IRED is available at http://www.epa.gov/oppsrrd1/REDs/diazinon_ired.pdf. The Federal Register notices announcing the availability of the IRED for comment are available at http://www.epa.gov/fedrgstr.
