EPA NAMES DOD "CHAMPION" FOR PESTICIDE MANAGEMENT

The Department of Defense (DoD) Armed Forces Pest Management Board (AFPMB) has been recognized by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as a "Champion" in their Pesticide Environmental Stewardship Program.  EPA recognized AFPMB for its extraordinary level of commitment and outstanding efforts to reduce pesticide risks and protect human health and the environment.

 The AFPMB is one of more than130 members of the program established in 1994 to reduce risks associated with pesticides.  Dr. Janet Anderson, director of EPA's Biopesticides and Pollution Prevention Division, said that DoD, the only federal agency awarded Champion status in 2002, deserved the award for "pushing the envelope by setting ambitious goals and implementing strategies for reducing pesticide risk."

 The AFPMB works to ensure that deployed ground forces and military installations have effective control of pests and insects that carry diseases.  It also works to incorporate the use of biopesticides and non-chemical or least-toxic chemical techniques to control pests and disease vectors.  The board is the lead advocate for the use of personal protective measures against vector-borne diseases, further reducing reliance on pesticides.
