08-29-00c CASE REPORT - Effects of Pesticides on the Immune System
The long-term consequences of chronic pesticide exposure in the parts per billion and trillion are unknown. However, the massive increase of cancer in the farming areas in the USA suggests an adverse relationship
08-29-00b Return to the aftermath of Malathion Spraying in Florida
The result: Malathion - at levels up to 81 times higher than state and federal standards - found its way into the creeks, which feed into Lake Thonotosassa. It wiped out all but two species of snails and two species of beetles.
The long-term absence of aquatic invertebrates - key components of the food chain - could ultimately affect fish, reptiles and even people, Morgan said.

Your Neighbors - Unwilling Victims of Pesticide Misuse
by Jackie Alan Giuliano, Ph.D

08-27-00a We have a right to live Without pesticides:   We should work with nature instead of waging chemical warfare against it
When Rachel Carson published her famous anti-pesticide book `Silent Spring' in 1962, a campaign was launched to discredit her. Things haven't changed much in 38 years.

Who Is Responsible For Environmental Child Abuse?
And we may not be too far from the day when the use of household and garden pesticides in the presence of children could be identified as a form of environmental child abuse.

08-25-00b

New York Attorney General - The federal government should require pesticide manufacturers to fully disclose their "inert'' ingredients since they may pose serious health risks.
..the report found that more than 200 chemicals used as inert ingredients, though not (considered) active when used in a particular pesticide product, are classified as hazardous environmental pollutants under federal environmental statutes.

Florida Pest Control Operator - "We were deceived"
I think what is needed here is a class action suit by applicators against the government, citing their failure to recognize the potential threat of significantly high levels of exposure to pesticides to the applicators and to take measures to properly notify us of this potential threat.

Challenge Letter to Congressional Candidates
The letter below is adapted from the Children's Environmental Health Network (CEHN) letter to presidential candidates to help identify each candidates commitment to the environment and our children's health. It has been adapted to address other congressional hopefuls at our local level of government.

MODERN ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION--PART 3
Risk assessment is the most powerful intellectual tool that the poisoners and destroyers of the planet have ever invented. It is their battering ram AND their camouflage. It provides "cover" for just about any damaging activity that anyone might want to undertake.

How Big Tobacco fixed its problem with pesticide "regulators"
The warning bells had started ringing in 1989, when the Environmental Protection Agency called into question the whole family of EBDCs by concluding that the chemical byproduct they generate is probably a highly potent human carcinogen.

08-24-00b

New York Governor Signs Pesticide Law
The law requires companies that use pesticides to give at least a 48-hour warning to neighbors living within 150 feet of any spraying site. It also requires schools and day care facilities to provide parents and staff with a notice before pesticides are applied on school grounds.

Pyrethrin Can Cause Acute Asthma Attacks
It has a low toxicity in humans, but it can cause skin rash, upper respiratory tract irritation, and, in rare cases, potentially life-threatening asthma attacks, according to published reports.

Organic Gardening getting bigger
Mainstream gardeners and homeowners -- for decades, indiscriminately spraying lawns, shrubs and gardens with deadly poisons -- are demanding alternatives to chemical pest and weed controls.

Lindane Pollutes LA Drinking Water - California to ban uses
... a single treatment of head lice or scabies with lindane pollutes 6 million gallons of water, the equivalent of 300 swimming pools. Lindane lasts for a long time in the environment, where it can contaminate the tissues of fish and other animals.
(Now, who will examine Pyrethrin, Pyrethrum, Permethrin, Pythroids, Malathion and Piperonyl Butoxide being used for lice and scabies and ending up in our water table?)

Scientist Differs With E.P.A. on Malathion
The toxicologist, Dr. Brian Dementi, who was one of the E.P.A.'s lead scientists in charge of evaluating malathion, testified before an independent scientific advisory panel that the chemical was a potentially greater cancer threat than the federal agency's preliminary and mostly benign report on it. That report found little evidence that it was harmful to humans when used correctly

Lawn Care Industry and Dow Science
...defining the term ‘pesticide’ and surprising the lawn care customer by naming everyday items as potential hazards doesn’t offer proof to the safety or lack of risks associated with pesticides, implications can be made for either argument (Dow points the way to showing how customers can be convinced that alternatives to pesticides and herbicides (i.e., soap and water) have many dangers too.)

Thyroid receptor binding of pyrethroids
Both the thyroid and retinoic acid effects are known to be associated with autoimmune disease.  In male children, autism and ADD or ADHD seem to be autoimmune in nature and in adult females the entire range of conditions from rheumatoid arthritis , multiple sclerosis, systemic lupus, and more are autoimmune in nature.

It's Time To Pull the Plug On Pesticide Use
Court challenges by those who make a living from pesticides have already taken place. The power of the pesticide makers is considerable. Anyone who doubts it should check out the tragedy in Bhopal, India. To-date, Union Carbide has still not provided records of the pesticides that killed 5,000 people and injured untold thousands.

Public Panic over West Nile Virus ... a voice of reason in a sea of political mishandling
The seductiveness of aerial pesticide spraying, devastating to butterflies and other non-target species, and frightening and potentially harmful to many humans, should be the last, not the first, approach to controlling disease spread.

08-08-00a You can legally make your own "pesticides" from nontoxic ingredients supplied by the USEPA (but is it legal in California for PCOs to use them.)

Poison Producers' reveal their plan to keep pesticides in schools"
We are not concerned about the Affordable Education Act," he continued.  "It is going to the House and after it comes back, we will strip the school notification amendment out.  However, what we learned that day was our best friends can't say no when someone as extreme as Boxer gets up and says 'I want to protect children"'.

Response from Paul Helliker, Director of the California Department of Pesticide Regulation
"You seem to blame us for people using pesticides.  That is akin to blaming the police for every murder that is committed."
Reply from Steve: The only other way that Mr. Helliker's comparison would be true - would be if the Police Department historically/currently would have demanded that only their "registered" guns, knives, and other weapons could/can "legally" be used to settle disputes.

(Yeah,"trust" the corporations to do the right thing.)

08-05-00a Parkinson's disease is thought to be secondary to the presence of  neurotoxins, and pesticides have been implicated as possible causative agents.

The Continued Silence
After the Nuremburg trials we began to produce and to use basically the same neuro-toxins or organophosphates that had been used as nerve gases to kill innocent people to "control" insect pests. (Chemical companies continue to profit from death.)

Pesticides Increase the Incidence of Encephalitis
Due to the recent increase in journal articles finding that low level chemical exposures can decrease the quality of mammalian immune system function, it is quite reasonable to expect wildlife in this immune weakened state to contract encephalitis more frequently.

PYRETHROID DOCUMENTED RESEARCH

  • These findings provide a mechanism by which chronic exposure of humans or animals to pesticides containing these compounds may result in disturbances in endocrine effects relating to androgen action

  • The results suggest a possibility that pyrethroids may alter the cellular energy metabolism of the nervous system.

Dejected Lobstermen Blame Mosquito Spraying in Crippling Die-Off
It is a suspicion that some scientists are taking seriously, saying there are plausible indicators -- but not definitive proof -- that the pesticides could have played a role in the catastrophic lobster kill.
