Happy Holidays From Your Local Chemical Company------  ...animals along the bank and almost all fish in the White River in Indianapolis are dying from an "unknown" pollutant.  Residents are being told to avoid the river and not even walk along side it.  UNANSWERED BY EPA or DPR

Is hot air "illegal" in California?
Well Lyndon, is the use of hot air to safely control California pests "illegal" in your opinion?  UNANSWERED BY EPA or DPR

"Pesticide" Testing on Humans-----------
Ken Cook, president of the Environmental Working Group, an activist organization in Washington that has tracked the human research trend, called the testing questionable. "Would you want your kid to participate in a study like this?" (My question is even more basic, what good does it do to only test the active ingredient when you are using/ignoring all of the "inerts", contaminants, metabolites, and any/all synergistic effects?)  UNANSWERED BY EPA or DPR

Gulf War Syndrome
The latest study builds on the group's earlier work ("The war over Gulf War Syndrome," March 5, 1998), in which the doctors hypothesized that the veterans' symptoms -- chronic fatigue, sleeplessness, motor coordination problems, memory loss, and muscle pain -- stemmed from damage in the brain stem and basal ganglia caused by low level exposure to a combination of neurotoxic chemicals, including nerve gas, an experimental nerve-gas antidote, and pesticides  UNANSWERED BY EPA or DPR

Another Needless Victim Pleads for Mercy
"I accept partial responsibility for my illness due to my employment and life ignorance," she said, "but I will not take responsibility for being poisoned by pesticides in our own home and on our own property. "
Brown said she believes a highly toxic pesticide known by the brand names Guthion or Sniper 2-E has been sprayed every year since at least 1992 near her farm. UNANSWERED BY EPA or DPR

A NOT SO MERRY CHRISTMAS LETTER
Under the guise of "freedom of choice" and "Freedom to Farm" corporate agribusiness continues to seek to both standardize our food supply through relegating it to assembly-line  "manufacturing"  and moving its production from the fields to the "life science" corporate laboratories,  while at the same time forcing consumers to pay higher and higher quantitative and qualitative costs for their daily bread.  UNANSWERED BY EPA or DPR

Exposure to "registered" pesticides linked to pancreatic cancer
Organochlorine compounds, such as DDT, DDE, and PCB, have been thought to be possible carcinogens -- cancer-causing chemicals -- but before this study, there was no information linking them to pancreatic cancer, the authors explain. UNANSWERED BY EPA or DPR

If the Label is the "LAW"-------
"If your "registered"  labels are the "LAW," how can anyone legally use any of your "registered" pesticide POISONS?  If your labels and MSDSs for the "inerts" are different and/or more restrictive than your "registered" label for the active  POISON ingredient, how can anyone possibly obey your "LAW"? (Is this a case of don't ask, don't tell???  What's in the inerts can kill!)  UNANSWERED BY EPA or DPR

Acute Pesticide Poison-Related Illness------
The Medfly Eradication Program began on April 4, 1998, with ground applications of malathion/bait* and diazinon, followed by aerial malathion/bait application that began on April 30. All insecticide applications were completed on September 6. The respective county health departments estimated that 132,000 persons resided in the areas treated with these pesticides.  UNANSWERED BY EPA or DPR

Dow AgroSciences ""What Good Thinking Can Do"------"
New York Department of Environmental Conservation investigation into the Trimper case brings into question the safety of the entire Dursban TC product, as well as EPA's ability to police what inert, or "other" ingredients that registrants are allowed to keep in some of their older registrations.  UNANSWERED BY EPA or DPR

This could have been an American Bophal....
A chain-reaction collision yesterday involving three trucks, including a tractor-trailer which was hauling 16 cylinders of methyl bromide.  UNANSWERED BY EPA or DPR

More Press on the Earlimart "Registered" Pesticide Victims------
There is a refrain going through my mind as I write this letter:  "How many deaths will it take until they know how that too many people have died - The answer is blowing in the wind."  Sadly in California the (Mother's) answer is not blowing in the wind the POISONS are!

Bradley Powell, Pacific Southwest Regional Forester for the US Forest Service, announced tight new restrictions on any proposed aerial application of the herbicide hexazinone to the 11 national forests of the Sierra Nevada on 12/6/99 ... following a spring "accident" on the Stanislaus National Forest, wherein a FS-contracted helicopter directly dosed about two and a half miles of biologically significant Rose Creek with the chemical.  UNANSWERED BY EPA or DPR

Town Humiliated in Pesticide Scare-----
Though plastic tarps offered a partial shield, Huizar and the others said they were forced to strip down to nothing in an area within view of a crowd of at least 100 emergency personnel, TV crews and other spectators.
``It felt like we were raped,'' said Huizar, 42, reenacting how she was told to lift up her arms and turn in circles as she walked down the line.  UNANSWERED BY EPA or DPR

Jury Rules for Couple in Chemical Spill Case-------
The judgment was rare in that few plaintiffs are successful in such cases. Of 15 other Dursban cases in the country this year, 14 were dismissed and one was awarded $1,000, according to U.S. News and World Report.
"The jury made a causal connection," said Paul Leonard, one of the attorneys for the Swifts. "They made it abundantly clear that they considered pesticides to be the cause of their conditions."  UNANSWERED BY EPA or DPR

A Civics lesson Continued--(The rest of the story)-----  Pressure derails law to shield kids. Congress directs an environmental agency to cut chemicals (POISONS)  in food; instead, power trumps science to save an insecticide (Guthion) (POISON)  UNANSWERED BY EPA or DPR

A Civics Lesson on Insecticide Poison "Regulation"---- (Guthion)
Congress, the White House and federal agencies all leak scraps of information. Reporters and lobbyists wheel after them like hungry seagulls.
Many leaks are of little consequence. But when a seven-page memo slipped from the Environmental Protection Agency in February 1998, it carried the interlocking fates of America's farmers and an $11 billion pesticide industry.   UNANSWERED BY EPA or DPR

Children exposed to pesticides risk cancer. -A study of 500 children in Denver found that in homes where pesticides (POISONS) were used, children were more likely to develop leukemia, brain tumors, lymphoma and other cancers.  In fact, a total of 20 studies from across the country in the peer-reviewed literature document a relationship between exposure to pesticides (POISONS) and increased risk of cancer in children.  UNANSWERED BY EPA or DPR
12-5-99
Why is it so Hard to Promote Environmental Health-------   Past ICOH (International Commission on Occupational Health) activity on pesticides has tended to reflect an industry orientation rather than a broader agenda in this field. Industry is directly or indirectly involved in the decision-making process about pesticide testing, approvals, and regulation, and is the source of primary toxicity data through its own or contracted laboratories. UNANSWERED BY EPA or DPR

Could we really have another "Bhopal" here? -  Bhopal, India - The very name calls up images of thousands of victims dying from clouds of poisonous gas that rolled over them December 2, 1984 while they slept. Today, a new report released by U.S. Public Interest Research Group and the Working Group on Community Right-to-Know says a similar incident could happen in the United States.

Bhopal 15 Years Later------  Union Carbide continues to withhold information on the composition of the leaked gases and their effects on humans. Although such information is needed for proper diagnosis and care, Union Carbide maintains that these facts are trade secrets.  UNANSWERED BY EPA or DPR

non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma------------  Among the top suspects are man-made chemicals that interfere with the immune system. As far back as the 1970s, scientists observed that the highest rates of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma occur in farmers. This observation has led many investigators to examine the effects of insecticides, fungicides and herbicides. UNANSWERED BY EPA or DPR
