Minutes of Council Meeting: January, 2001
Councilmember Caldararo said that drift of application is very important. We are just learning what happens with pesticide products. We need an attitude change. Personal freedom needs to be considered
Councilmember Egger stated that this is a basic, common sense, good neighbor policy. He then encouraged a member of the audience to speak.
Stacy Carlson, Agricultural Commissioner for the County of Marin, said his basic purpose at the meeting was to listen to comments. He encourages the public to control pesticides. There are a few issues in the ordinance that address private property rights. He encourages the Town Council to address the issues with Sharon Dobbins, an attorney for the state of California in Sacramento. He encourages the Council to check out what products are considered "pesticides" but may be registered with the EPA. They may not be obvious, such as antimicrobials.
Attorney Sharp announced that he would connect with Mr. Carlson and the counsel for the state.
Mayor Ghiringhelli commended Councilmember- Egger for presenting this issue. He does not believe it is enforceable but that it will raise awareness. He asked there be an educational clause added. He then asked the Council to fine tune the document and return it to the February meeting.
MOTION/EGGER/ TO BRING THE DOCUMENT BACK TO THE FEBRUARY MEETING.
Mayor Ghiringhelli thought the key to success was the educational element. Councilmember Caldararo agreed that we can very easily add reference to Integrated Pest Management.
MOTION/SECOND/EGGER/TREMAINE TO BRINGG THE DOCUMENT BACK TO THE FEBRUARY MEETING WITH THE CHANGES TO THE ORDINANCE TO DIRECT PEOPLE TO THE INTEGRATED PEST MANAGEMENT PROGRAM AT THE COUNTY.
Councilmember Brandborg wants research on the opening statement on health. She wants the information to be more accurate. She needs to gather more information,
