Mice  in the house

11/29/99
Dear Steve.
Here at the Holy Innocents Hermitage we have a mouse problem. This house which sits on 32 acres is very old , and there I am sure many place a mouse can get in. It would cost upteem dollars to secure this place, however iam hoping you can offer a less inexpensive way.  I have traps set near my washer and dryer as they seem to come up from the cellar. I am very afraid of them, I have used d con , and now Iam smelling the results, it is killing them , but not irradicating the problem. I do not want to poison them as we have 10 dogs here and that in itself is a scary thing as poison is dangerous.
CAN YOU HELP US PLEASE.? THANK YOU STEVE. HAPPY HOLIDAYS.
GOD BLESS

Response:

Dear Sister Veronica,
The simplest/safest trap is to take some plastic pails (even plastic milk jugs will work) and put 3-4" of water in the containers - with a paint stirrer, ruler of other piece of flat wood leading (like a ramp) to the top of the containers (you can tape it at the top).  Then cover the surface of the water with sunflower seeds or whole oats that float - the food covers the surface, the mice smell the food - see nothing wrong, "walk the plank" and ........ "You" will need to put these traps about every 12 feet in the basement and wherever you see activity.  "You" (or some other kind soul) will need to empty them occassionally (outside) - but you should not smell anything until you do.  They are very effective.  Let me know if you ned some other safe and effective alternatives.
G-d Bless!
Steve
