Disease Affects Two Women

Scores of people on the pacific coast are battling a disease that doctors say
does not exist. But to them, it's very real. In the half light of her small
Sunnyside home, Cathy Mcdonald and her friend Ruth Lyons spend hours every day
looking into a microscope. They look at lesions in their bodies that rememble an
insect part, a fibre or even sometime's something sparkling. Whatever it is, the
physical symptoms can not be overlooked. Other symptoms include nausea, diarhea
cyclic itching, fatigue and sometimes "stuff" that comes out of their skin. They
say that the worst part of the disease is the brain fog and not knowing how
you'll feel from one day to the next. That's the way it's been for Cathy and
Ruth for 7 years. Cathy's marriage crumbled under the stress. Ruth always
worries that her daughter will be the next victim. Both of them have been turned
away by dozens of doctors. In spite of the physical symptomps doctors from
around the valley diagnosed both Ruth and Cathy with delusional parasitosis. In
plain English, doctors told them they were crazy. "I pretty much gave up on
doctors. I was accused of mutilating myself, and i was told my mentally ill
condition was causing my symptoms," said Cathy. Cathy has no history of being
psychotic and she says her employee reviews at work were all positive. So now
she's at work with Ruth and her microscope documenting everything she finds. Now
the real challenge is proving the disease does exist to anyone that can help.
This is part 1 of a 2 part series.
