Ivermectin for scabies

Ivermectin (Stromectol or Mectizan) is an oral drug that can be used to treat several conditions caused by parasites that live on or in the human body. Research shows that a single oral dose of ivermectin provides an effective cure for scabies in humans.¹ This drug is available by prescription in the United States but is not an FDA-approved treatment for scabies.

Ivermectin is:

• Not fully tested for use in humans. Limited data suggests that ivermectin treatment is safe for adults. More testing is needed to confirm its safety for treating children and the elderly.
• Recommended for use when conventional medications have not been able to clear a scabies infestation (usually of crusted (Norwegian) scabies).
• An effective scabies treatment for most people who have HIV infection.
• Sometimes combined with permethrin (Elimite) for treating crusted (Norwegian) scabies.

Ivermectin is gaining increasing favor in the medical community based on its demonstrated safety and effectiveness, few and mild side effects, and rapid action.
